Russell Johnson bolsters CRA’s Safety Case team

15/05/2014 10:08

Following completion of an MSc in Applied Radiation Physics Russell has 17 years’ experience in the nuclear industry.  Earlier experience was in radiation measurement and gamma spectrometry, later progressing into shielding calculations and the use of Monte-Carlo radiation transport codes.

Russell brings extensive experience of safety case production which includes producing modification safety cases for the refurbishment and replacement of nuclear lifting equipment, package movement safety cases and decommissioning – this work has included running HAZOP studies and the production of fault and engineering schedules.

Experience with Probabilistic Safety Assessment has included the development of a comprehensive PSA model for the design of a nuclear submarine refuelling facility, which included the use of quantitative insights to risk inform the design.

In the area of radiation shielding and radiation transport modelling Russell has worked on the shielding design for various plant and waste package designs, and carried out accident condition dose rate assessments. Experience includes both neutron and gamma transport assessments – examples of neutron work includes PWR pressure vessel dosimetry, and studying the effects of AGR graphite moderator weight loss.

Between 2009 and 2013 Russell was seconded to two projects based in France. The first was working on the Chernobyl reactor stabilisation and containment dome project, and the second was a long term secondment with EDF working on a number of PSA and safety case related projects for the UK EPR project.
